Avalanche Kills 3 Austrian Ski Mountaineers On Gran Zebru In The Ortler Alps Of Italy

Gran Zebru, Italy – On Thursday, March 22, 2018 three ski mountaineers were caught, buried, and killed in an avalanche near Paso Bottiglia while climbing 3851-meter Gran Zebru (Koenig Spitze) in the Ortler Alps near Sondrio in South Tyrol/Alto Adige in Italy.

The group had stayed the night at the Casati Refuge and started their ascent of the Gran Zebru in the morning via the east side. They were well equipped. The avalanche occurred around 10:30 near Paso Bottiglia while the group was ascending. Other skiers on Cima Solda saw the avalanche and alerted authorities.

Rescuers responded to the scene of the avalanche via helicopters. Two Austrians were declared dead at the scene, while another Austrian succumbed to injuries in the hospital.
