Grignetta, Italy – On Friday, February 16, 2018 two mountaineers were caught, buried, and killed in an avalanche while ascending the Sasso Incastrato Canale on the eastern side of the 2177-meter Grignetta which overlooks the town of Primaluna in Lecco in northern Italy.

The incident occurred as the climbers were near the exit of the gully at about 1800 meters. The victims were caught in the avalanche and dragged 200 meters down the slope. It is reported that the avalanche occurred due to rising temperatures.
A third climber notified authorities of the accident. Rescuers responded, but were unable to help the victims.
The victims were identified as Ezio Artusi, 41, and Giovanni Giarletta, 37. They were both members of Alpine Rescue.
