Avalanche Kills Ski Tourer In French Alps Near Ceillac, France

59-Year-Old Female Ski Tourer With French Alpine Club of Albertville Killed In Avalanche

Ceillac, France – At around 12:30 on Tuesday, February 23, 2016 a group of approximately 20 ski tourers with the French Alpine Club Albertville were descending a slope around 2500 meters in the area of Pic de la Font Sancte in the Massif Queyras in the Haute-Alpes near Ceillac, France when they triggered an avalanche.

The avalanche caught and buried three of the ski tourers. Two escaped uninjured, but the third, a 59-year-old woman, was found in a state of cardiac arrest. She was evacuated to a hospital in Briancon, where she died.

The avalanche risk was 3 out of 5 at elevations over 2200 meters. All skiers had the appropriate gear. The High Mountain Gendarmerie Platoon will perform a proper investigation.
