Tobacco Root Mountains, Montana – On January 25, 2019 a backcountry skier was killed in an avalanche near Bell Lake in the Tobacco Root Mountains of Montana.

CAIC reports that the avalanche occurred near Bell Lake in the Tobacco Root Mountains. Four ski tourers were caught. One person was injured and another killed.
Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center reported that this accident occurred outside of their advisory area. They classified the slide as
SS-ASu-R4-D3-O. It occurred at 8800′ on an east aspect. They note that the slide measured 450 feet wide and 1000 feet long. Photos of the slide and more information can be found at MTAvalanche.com.
