- Snowmachiner Dies In Hatcher Pass Avalanche – A Mountain Journey – The Hatcher Pass Avalanche Center reports that a group of snowmachiners triggered an avalanche on 1/2/16. One was buried and did not survive. RIP.
- AAC President Doug Walker Killed In Avalanche – A Mountain Journey – Doug Walker, the president of the American Alpine Club, died in an avalanche while hiking Granite Mountain near Snoqualmie Pass in Washington’s Cascades. RIP.

- Stein Eriksen Has Died At 88 – Unofficial Networks – Stein Eriksen is one of the founders of modern skiing. The Norwegian Olympic champion died in his Park City home this week at age 88.
- There’s A New Tallest Peak In The North American Arctic – National Geographic – After a recent mapping project, Mt. Isto (8,976′) beat out Mt. Chamberlain (8,917′) as the highest peak in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska.

- Telluride Helitrax Trigges Huge Avalanche During Avalanche Control Work – A Mountain Journey – Check out this stunning avalanche footage taken while Telluride Helitrax did avalanche control work above the Ophir road on 12/29.
- Pro Snowboarders Head To North Korea To Test Kim Jong-un’s New Ski Resort – The Guardian – Terje Hakonsen, Dan Liedahl, and Mike Ravelson get to test the slopes at North Korea’s Masikryong Ski Resort in January.
- Video: Terrifying Footage Of A Skier Triggering & Riding In An Avalanche – SnowBrains – A scary video of a skier getting caught in an avalanche and going for a big ride.
- Buried Alive, Snowboarder Used Every 3rd Breath To Scream For Help – CBC.ca – Trevor Hamre was trapped in a “coffin-like” hole after tagging a tree and getting buried in-bounds at Kicking Horse. Super scary situation.
- Three Lost Snowboarders Found Near Mt. Ashland – FirstTracksOnline.com – Three snowboarders spent the night on Mt. Ashland in Oregon after getting lost on the “opposite side of the mountain from the ski area.”
- Boy Scout Leader Mauled By Black Bear After Climbing Into Bear Den – Unofficial Networks – Scout Master Chris Petronino accidentally climbed into a cave with a hibernating black bear near Split Rock reservoir in New Jersey. He sustained serious injuries, but will survive.
- Search Called Off For Missing Skier – ABCFOXMontana.com – Bart Pickard went missing on 12/22 at Lost Trail Powder Mountain. The search was called off on 12/31. A different article suggests that he may have fallen into a tree well.
- Two Time Mugs Stump Award Winner Ryan Jennings Dies On Ice Climb – RockAndIce.com – Ryan Jennings died on 12/30 while ice climbing near Redstone Slabs in Colorado. Jennings fell when the ice column he was climbing collapsed. RIP.
- The Whitewater Movie – 40 Years – BackcountrySkiingCanada.com – Whitewater Ski resort in BC is an amazing place. Here’s a cool video celebrating this cool resort.
