Appalachian Trail – On October 26, 2017 82-year-old Dale “Greybeard” Sanders became the oldest person to complete the 2,190 mile Appalachian Trail. His feat breaks the previous record set by Lee Barry who completed the AT at age 81 in 2004.
According to OutsideOnline.com, “On March 14, he began his continuous journey north and made it to Harpers Ferry, West Virginia—the headquarters of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy—by June. To avoid the coldest autumn weather, he then traveled north to Maine and set off southbound from Mount Katahdin back toward Harpers Ferry, where he hiked the final mile of the trail Thursday morning.”
WashingtonPost.com, notes that when Sanders finished the AT, he “danced a jig” and said he felt “euphoric!”
Sanders is also the oldest person to paddle the Mississippi River. In 2019, he plans to canoe the entire length of the Missouri River to the Gulf of Mexico.
