New Zealand is a mountain paradise. This stunning destination is home to some of the world’s most incredible mountains. The highest mountains in New Zealand are all located in the Southern Alps of the South Island. If you’re a mountain enthusiast, New Zealand is the ultimate mountain destination. Go. Play. Explore. Enjoy. New Zealand rocks.

The following elevations for the highest mountains in New Zealand are based on data from the Alpine Club Of New Zealand in their publication Mountains Of New Zealand published in 2013. This invaluable resource ranks the 856 highest mountains in New Zealand. The list is somewhat arbitrary as a “mountain” only qualified if it passed two simple tests: first, that they reach an altitude of 1400 metres or more; and secondly, that they are at least 300 metres above the lowest saddle between them and the adjacent ‘mountain’.
Based on that data, the ten highest mountains were all located on the South Island in the regions of Canterbury and West Coast. All of the highest mountains were over 3000 meters in elevation. Now this list doesn’t account for some impressive peaks as those mountains do not meet the above mentioned criteria. But climbing these 10 highest mountains in New Zealand would be an impressive feat.
