On August 25, 1916 President Woodrow Wilson signed the Organic Act which created the National Park Service as a part of the US Department of the Interior. Today the National Park System manages 417 unique units that protect 84 million acres. Of those units, 60 are designated as National Parks and in this post you’ll find a map and a list of national parks by state.

The 60 US National Parks protect over 52 million acres in 29 states and 2 territories. California is home to the most national parks with 9. Alaska is close behind with 8 national parks. Four national parks stretch across state borders and are therefore located in 2 or even 3 states (These parks are designated with *** in the list below).

This list of national parks by state includes all 60 national parks. From the oldest national park (Yellowstone in 1872) to the newest (Gateway Arch in 2018) to the largest (Wrangell-St. Elias), all of these special places are meant to be enjoyed by all. Hopefully this list of national parks by state will help you plan your next national park adventure.
