Mountaineer Suffers 600-Meter Fatal Fall On Arete de Rochefort On Mont Blanc Massif In French Alps

Jean-François Hagenmuller Dies After 600-Meter Fall NearDent du Géant On The Rochefort Ridge On The Mont Blanc Massif

Arete de Rochefort, Mont Blanc – On June 22, 2016 Jean-François Hagenmuller, 57, suffered a 600-meter fatal fall while solo climbing near theDent du Géant (4013 m) on the French side of the Arete de Rochefort on the Mont Blanc massif in the Alps near Chamonix, France.

Hagenmuller and his climbing partner had spend the night near the Dent du Geant. The next morning one of the two climbers decided not to attempt/continue the climb and stayed behind. Hagenmuller continued.

When Hagenmuller did not return by early afternoon, his climbing partner notified the Chamonix PGHM (Chamonix High Mountain Platoon). They responded and found the body of the climber on edge of the Arete de Rochefort. Chamonet.com writes that Hagenmuller suffered a “600m fall on the French side of the Dent du Geant.”

The victim was identified as Jean-François Hagenmuller, a 57-year-old photographer, mountain guide,and professor at the National School of Skiing and Mountaineering. He was from Chamonix, France. RIP.

This tragic accident follows an avalanche fatality that killed IFMGA guide Russell Braddock on Mont Blanc du Tacul earlier this week on June 20. Sad news from Chamonix this week.
