
Shakhtyorsk, Sakhalin Island, Russia – On December 6, 2016 an 81-year-old man was killed in a roof avalanche in Shakhtyorsk on the west coast of Sakhalin Island in Russia.
According to TheSiberianTimes.com, after gathering water from a nearby spring the man was returning through the busy city center when a large block of snow slid off of the roof and killed him. The snow hit him in the head. He died before an ambulance arrived to help. Pictures from the scene are available here.
Sakhalin Island is the largest Russian island. Located in the North Pacific Ocean, the area has seen heavy snow over the last several days.
