Avalanche Kills Snowmobiler In Morton Lake Area Of Owlshead Mountain Range Near Sicamous, BC

Sicamous, British Columbia – On Tuesday, March 8, 2016 the body of a 34-year-old snowmobiler was found in avalanche debris in the Morton Lake area of the Owlshead mountain range near Sicamous, British Columbia, Canada.

The man had gone for a solo ride on Sunday and planned to return on Monday evening. His family reported him missing at 2:20 AM on Tuesday morning. Sicamous RCMP, 10 members of Shuswap Search and Rescue, and 20 volunteers from Eagle Valley Snowmobile Club responded via ground and air.

The man was carrying both a SPOT GPS device and an avalanche transceiver. Rescuers located a ping from the GPS device near Skinny Ridge by Morton Lake and focused the search near there.

Due to high avalanche danger, rescuers used explosives from helicopters to control avalanches in the area. Once it was safe, rescuers located the man’s body with avalanche transceivers. He was declared dead and his body was airlifted out.
