Falling Cornice Kills Ski Tourer On Etale Massif Near La Clusaz, France

Etale Massif, France – On Tuesday, February 6, 2018 a 30-year-old ski tourer was killed in an avalanche triggered by a cornice falling above him on the east face of Pointe de Blonniere on the southern side of the Etale Massif near La Clusaz and La Giettaz in France.

The accident occurred as two skiers were climbing a steep chute. The temperatures rose causing a cornice to fail. One of the two skiers was caught and carried approximately 300 meters down the steep corridor. The other skier was unharmed and notified authorities. Unfortunately, the victim hit a block of ice and was declared dead at the scene.
