The victim and his climbing partner began their climb at 4am. At 5am they passed a group of 4 climbers who were retreating due to conditions. At 6:30am the group of 4 climbers witnessed an avalanche come down the route and alerted authorities.

Only 1 of the 2 climbers was caught in the avalanche. That climber was carried 300 meters over steep and rocky terrain. The climber suffered fatal injuries and died on the scene.

Further rockfall and avalanches made rescue difficult. Rescuers assisted all of the climbers out of the area via helicopter. Unfortunately, the victim died on the scene.

The Grossglockner is the highest mountain in Austria at 12,461′.
