Avalanche Traps Family Of 17 At Remote Ski Lodge Near Lake Ohau In New Zealand

Lake Ohau, New Zealand – After heavy snowfall on Saturday, September 9, 2017 an avalanche blocked the only access road to a remote ski lodge near Lake Ohau west of Twizel on the South Island of New Zealand. Since the slide covered the road, it trapped a family of 17 at the lodge.

NZHerald.co.nz reports that the snow is “4m high and 15m deep.” Ideally, the road will be cleared tomorrow, but the group is in no rush to get rescued. The family seems in good spirits about their situation and plans to watch the All Blacks vs Argentina rugby game. They still have power and plenty of wine.
