Backcountry Skier Falls And Dies In Icy Conditions In New Zealand
Skier Jeffrey Charles Atkinson, 22, took a 1,500 foot (500 meter) fall in icy conditions while backcountry skiing and died on New Zealand’s South Island on Monday, October 5, 2015. The incident took place in the backcountry near Treble Cone ski area – a ski resort near Wanaka, New Zealand.
According to FirstTracksOnline.com, Atkinson was touring in the early afternoon with a ski partner out of bounds near the summit of Treble Cone. When he fell, the conditions were still firm and he was unable to self-arrest in “an area marked by steep chutes that terminate in cliffs.”
Alpine Cliff and Rescue were notified and it took them over an hour to find the body. This incident happened out of bounds as Treble Cone Ski Resort closed on September 27.
Atkinson is from Littleton, Colorado. RIP.
