Seiler went missing on Sunday, February 5. When he did not return, relatives alerted authorities. Search efforts located his car at the Hotel Ganterwald on Simplonpasstrasse. Rescuers began to search for Seiler in the Rothwald/Wasenalp area.

Search efforts were made challenging due to avalanche hazards and fog. Seiler was eventually found. It appears that the man had toured on his splitboard from his vehicle toward the Wasenalp area when he was killed by an avalanche.
