Climbing Fat Man’s Reunion at Greek Creek in the Gallatin Canyon

Another beautiful day here in Montana, so I decided to go climbing. Today’s destination was Fat Man’s Reunion. Fat Man’s Reunion is rated 5.6 and is located behind  the Greek Creek Campground on the east side of the Gallatin River and 191. This face climb is visible from the road if you know where to look and it is a classic route.

Stew and I headed north from Big Sky to the Greek Creek Campground. Once you turn into the campground, head south and take an almost immediate left turn onto a gated dirt road. Follow the dirt road. There is a right handed switchback that goes uphill. There is a nice turnout at about 5850 feet on a grassy section on the left. If you see the USFS summer cabins, you’ve gone to far. By the way those summer cabins are awesome. There are about 8 cabins nestled in the woods.

From the parking area, you can see Fat Man’s Reunion. Start heading toward it and you will find a steep climbers trail. Follow it for approximately 0.3 miles (0.6 miles roundtrip) and 275 vertical feet to the base of the climb.

The climb is recently bolted. There are 8 bolts and chains at the top. The face is approximately 40 meters. There are lots of cracks, seams, flakes, and jugs. The key to this climb is good foot placement and there are plenty of bomber foot holds. The top is a large ledge and an easy belay spot off of the shiny chains. It’s a great climb.

Stew and I climbed the route twice. After watching the power company heli-haul power line towers, we went for an adventure up the second pitch. It’s a much easier section of rock – probably 5.5. We placed 4 pieces of gear over 15 to 20 meters of rock.

For gear, you need cams up to size 2 and a good selection of nuts.

At the top of either pitch, there are walk-offs. The walk-off at the top of the first pitch is not too bad. The walk-off from the 2nd pitch is more of a down climb over mossy rock. It may be best to rappel down this section. The down trail back to the base of the climb is not well defined so watch you step on loose rock and broken branches.

Fat Man’s Reunion is a classic climb in the Gallatin Canyon. Highly recommended.
